Spindle Cove is a popular retreat for ladies of gentle breeding and “delicate constitution,” who are supposed to reap healthful benefits from the bracing sea breeze. This popularity, taken along with the general paucity of men in the area, has earned the village the derisive moniker “Spinster Cove.” However, the young women who return year after year know it as a safe haven-a closely-knit community of intelligent, often unconventional women. Miss Susannah Finch has made Spindle Cove a safe, quiet refuge-a place that nurtures a young woman’s body, mind, and spirit. It is a place where men, especially ones bent of violent distruction, are most decidedly not welcome. Bramwell “Bram” Vincent West, now Lord Rycliff, does not want to be anywhere near Spindle Cove. After spending several years in the British Army, all he wants is to go home. He craves simple pleasures: hearty food, a warm bed, the faithful company of a trusty dog. But the Army has one last job for him -- he must raise a militia in Spindle Cove to ward off a rumored invasion by Napoleon. Though Bram is a decorated veteran who has faced down the French fearlessly, he may just have met his match in Susannah and the “spinsters” of Spindle Cove who do not take the militia’s invasion particularly well... But as Susannah and Bram clash, they find that they are irresistibly drawn together -- unfortunately, the threat of invasion is coming just as quickly. They must find a way to join forces before they lose each other for good.
