To those who were personally associated with Paramahansa Yogananda . author of Eterna Busca do Homem and Onde Existe Luz , his life and own being were a convincing testimony of the power and authenticity of the ancient Yoga science he presented to the world. In the last 60 years, the innumerable readers of his autobiography attest the presence, in the pages of the book, of the same light of spiritual authority that was irradiating from his being. Acclaimed as a masterpiece at its first edition 60 years ago, the book narrates not only the story of an exceptional life. It is also a profound introduction to the spiritual thinking of East - particularly Yoga, as the unparalleled science of direct and personal communion with God - revealing to the Western public, a knowledge that was, until then, only accessible to few people.
Considered a modern spiritual classic, Autobiografia de um Iogue has been translated into many languages and is used as a text and reference work in numerous colleges and universities. A perennial best-seller since it was first published, this book has found its way into the hearts of millions of readers around the world. The materialization of this work had been predicted long ago. Lahiri Mahasaya, one amongst the fundamental personalities of the revival of the original yoga science in modern times foresaw: 'About fifty years after my passing, an account of my life will be written because of a deep interest in yoga that will arise in the West. The message of yoga will encircle the globe. It will aid in establishing the brotherhood of man: a unity based on humanity's direct perception of the One Father.'
Years later, Swami Yukteswar, Lahiri Mahasaya's noble disciple, narrated such prediction to Paramahansa Yogananda : 'You must do your part in spreading that message, and in writing that sacred life.'
It was in 1945, exactly fifty years after Lahiri Mahasay's passing, that Paramahansa Yogananda completed his Autobiography of a Yogi, thus fully attending both of his guru's instructions: to provide the first detailed written account, in English, of the prominent life of Lahiri Mahasaya and to introduce the Indian millenary science of the soul to world public.
Autobiography of a Yogi is also the first safe step to those who wish to know the science of Kriya Yoga. Paramahansa Yogananda tells us in this book that, because of certain ancient yogic injunctions, he may not give a full explanation of Kriya Yoga (scientific meditation techniques) in a book intended for the general public. But he gives a general view of the psychophysical and spiritual benefits of Kriya Yoga, that became widely known in modern India through the instrumentality of Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar's master. Such millenary science is spread with all its original spiritual blessing until nowadays through lessons of Self-Realization Fellowship, organization founded in 1925 by Paramahansa Yogananda , in 1920, with international headquarters in U.S.A.
