Descrição

Nearly 15 years separate the first and the last performances presented on this remarkable DVD. By 1961, Chet – who began recording in 1952 – had been a star for less than a decade. All of the material on this DVD was filmed in Italy, a
country where Baker was both imprisoned and adored, and with which he had a long-lasting relationship. Our first document here (with respect to chronology) is a set of three tunes filmed in Sanremo in 1961. It includes two fast bebop tunes and a wonderful vocal rendition of “You Don’t Know What Love Is”. Although this was performed in Italy, the group consists of French musicians, including the well-known pianist Francy Boland (who would form a classic big band with American expatriate Kenny Clarke). Boland had played with Baker in 1956, and recorded with him in both live and studio settings. The second portion of our program (with respect to chronology) finds Chet at the Music Inn Club in Rome in 1976. Flautist and saxophonist Jacques Peltzer fronts the band here with Baker, creating a very intimate atmosphere. Peltzer was a highly talented musician and Chet’s friend. His life was also marred by a long-term drug addiction. Chet plays beautifully and sings on “Deep in a Dream of You” and “This Is Always”. The final portion is in color, and Chet’s face shows signs of the passage of time. This comes from a TV show taped in Rome on January 25, 1988 (shortly before Baker’s death on May 13, 1988). On this show, he plays a quartet selection, “Arbor Way”, and then sings a version of Elvis Costello’s “Almost Blue” backed only by Nicola Stilo on guitar.
