Hawke’s screwed-up life (thanks to the violent effects of the spirit trap) takes another tumble, along with his heart, when he finds himself in love with Faith, the smiley, darling intended mate of the newest Feral, Maxim. But when they bring Maxim into his animal, the new Feral doesn’t shift into a fox as they expect, but into one of the seventeen lost animals that disappeared centuries ago. When more newly-marked Ferals arrive, the original Ferals celebrate…until the new ones turn on them and try to kill them. The Mage have succeeded in creating evil Ferals to destroy the good. The new Ferals flee to regroup, but Faith remains behind. Despite the fact that she’s falling in love with Hawke, and they can finally be together, she’s devastated and terrified. She knows now that Maxim had been controlling her—a control she fears continues. For during the uprising, she discovered a terrible secret—that she, too, has been marked, unnaturally, to be a Feral Warrior. And there’s no unmarking a Feral. Except by death.
