Ella Fitzgerald In Köln 1974 - DVD

One of only a few jazz vocal queens, Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was an inspiring individual who, against all odds, rose from extreme poverty to fame thanks to her immense talents. In a world where female vocalists were usually beautiful stylized girls, Ella’s inimitable voice and indomitable sense of swing earned her a place above the rest and in almost no time she became the Chick Webb orchestra’s primary draw. From then on, she sang and recorded with many of the most important jazz figures and was revered as a living legend throughout the remainder of her life. This remarkable performance, filmed in Germany in 1974, showcases Ella accompanied by old friends and collaborators. She sings “I Cant’t Give You Anything but Love” backed by the great Roy Eldridge on trumpet (and singing scat with Ella) and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis on tenor sax, plus the splendid rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan, Joe Pass, Keter Betts and Bobby Durham. The brass section from Peter Herbolzheimer’s band joins the rhythm section for “It Don’t Mean a Thing”. By that time, the group already featured such stellar members as Art Farmer, Ake Persson & Herb Geller. Ella sits out on the third number, an instrumental featuring organist Dieter Reith. Ella returns for the Gershwin opus “The Man I Love”, on which she is backed by only Flanagan, Betts and Durham. Joe Pass joins them on “Mr. Paganini” (during which Ella quotes “I’m Beginning to See the Light”). “How High the Moon”, one of bebop’s anthems, is performed here as a duet by Ella with Tommy Flanagan in a lovely and delicate slow tempo. Ella sits out again on the Herbolzheimer tune “Like a Soft Breeze”, featuring an amazing
solo by Art Farmer on flugelhorn and one by Ake Persson on trombone. “Some of These Days” features Ella backed by the rhythm section of Flanagan, Pass, Betts and Durham plus the brass from Herbolzheimer’s band. “Gee, Baby Ain’t I Good to You?” is another duet, this time by Ella with Joe Pass, with whom she recorded many duet albums. The final number brings back the quintet of Eldridge, Davis, Flanagan, Betts and Durham accompanying Ella, who sings the melody with the horns as if she were just one more instrument and later sings scat fours with Eldridge’s trumpet. This lively tune closes the show.
