It was not until the advent of the classical style that the great composers began composing specifically for the guitar. But there had already been a repertoire for the instrument well before that, since it often supplanted the lute in the 16th and 17th centuries. René Bartoli here invites us to rediscover some of the works of the Renaissance transcribed for his instrument, as well as a number of more recent compositions by the Catalan and South American composers who have restored the guitar to a place of honour.
