London Concert 1964 - DVD

This wonderful release presents an impressive concert by a true All Star combo. Recorded in London in 1964, the event brings together a group of veteran musicians with distinguished careers behind them. The most renowned of these great performers is, of course, Coleman Hawkins, who developed the tenor saxophone into an instrument for jazz improvisation.
Beginning his recording career in 1933, Harry Edison was one of the most swinging voices of the Count Basie orchestra for many years, before starting an extensive career as a leader and backing a great number of artists as a featured soloist.
Still alive at the time of this writing, Sir Charles Thompson made the transition from swing to bebop and had recorded
with Hawkins as early as 1945. Jimmy Woode is best remembered for the many years he spent holding down the bass chair in the Duke Ellington orchestra. The third great star, along with Hawkins and Edison, is of course Jo Jones, who was an integral part of Count Basie’s finest orchestra, and is widely regarded as one of the best swing drummers ever.
