London Concerts 1965 & 1966 - DVD

One of the greatest jazz trumpet figures of all time, John Birks 'Dizzy' Gillespie (1917-1993) was, along with alto saxophonist Charlie Parker and pianist Thelonious Monk, one of the founders of Modern Jazz, and for many years its most famous figure. Both with small groups and big orchestra, he had also a joyous personality and a deep knowledge of how to
behave in front of an audience. This gained him an aura of leader that seemed evident in nearly all the formations he played with. Dizzy's enormous charisma, both musically and personally are evident when seeing the two outstanding documents presented on this DVD. Both shows were recorded in London. The first one presents Diz fronting his own quintet in 1965, with such important musicians as James Moody and Kenny Barron. The second, filmed in 1966 according to most recent research (some sources stated the date as March, 1969) has him as part of an all star program that also
includes Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Teddy Wilson, Bob Cranshaw and Louis Bellson, plus, again, James Moody, who worked with Gillespie's formations for many years. The program on both shows is full of Dizzy's classic compositions, including two versions (one on each show) of the celebrated 'Tin Tin Deo', co-composed by Diz with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo. In all, an splendid DVD full of rarely seen performances.
