Victor Hugo never had the good luck that many minor poets had of finding “his” composer: unlike Wilhelm Müller, he did not have his Schubert, or Pierre Loüys his Fauré… But many of his poems were set to music by various composers, among them Liszt, Bizet, Wagner, Franck and Gounod. As J. Gaudon writes, ‘if Fabiano Fabiani in Marie Tudor could have sung to his two beloveds the version Gounod wrote of his Sérénade, one could well understand that they would have found it irresistible!’.
