Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1936-1977) was one of the most exciting saxophone players in jazz history. Completely blind since the age of two, he learned to play the bugle and the trumpet during his childhood. Although his main instrument was to become the tenor saxophone, Kirk became famous for playing a large variety of reeds, which, as we can see in these amazing performances, he used to alternate during the same concert, and even during the same tune. He even developed
the rare ability of playing various reeds at the same time, transforming himself into a whole orchestral saxophone section. It is, therefore, particularly interesting to be able to see him in action, armed with a large collection of wind instruments, which he acquired from around the world. This DVD brings together two complete previously unissued concerts. The first one, filmed in Milan in 1962, presents Kirk in the company of another famous blind musician, Catalonian pianist Tete Montoliu, who had recently recorded with Kirk at the Caf Montmartre, in Copenhagen. In addition to the high quality of their music, it is really bizarre to see both blind players interact on stage. For instance, check out the way Kirk literally takes Tete’s hands off of the keyboard to tell him the tune has ended during the initial Blues! The other performers featured here are also illustrious: bassist Tommy Potter, a former member of Charlie Parker’s quintet, and veteran bebop drummer Kenny Clarke, who was living in Europe by the time this performance was filmed. The second concert presents Kirk's regular 1967 quartet in Prague, and contains songs they were rehearsing live in order to include them in their subsequent album: 'The Inflated Tear', which they would record just a few days after this European tour, on November 27 and 30 of that year. The passionate live performance in Prague includes a poignant version of that album’s title tune. Apart from Kirk’s always
superb creativity, the pristine sound and image quality of both concerts deserve special mention, making this DVD a truly outstanding addition to Kirk’s artistic legacy.
