Pepper Martin is just starting to get used to her fall from grace. A former member of Cleveland’s upper-crust, Pepper’s resorted to a job as a tour guide at a local cemetery. And after a bump on the head, thanks to an ill-fated fall near a tombstone, she has the unenviable “gift” of communing with the deceased denizens of her cemetery. So when Didi Bowman, the dead sister of uber-novelist Merliee Bowman, appears asking for Pepper’s help, it looks like the fashionable Ms. Martin has herself another challenge. Didi insists that her sister stole the manuscript for her world-famous novel of the Civil War, So Far the Dawn, and it just so happens that Merilee is returning to her hometown for the opening of the So Far the Dawn museum. Pepper’s mission is to find evidence that Merliee is a fraud, and in so doing, ensure Didi that the blockbuster book’s proceeds go to the rightful heir--Didi’s destitute granddaughter. But nothing is ever as easy as it seems, and Pepper has to contend with the flaky Didi, two more meddling ghosts (the stars of a classic film adaptation of So Far the Dawn), and her own struggles to get back on her feet financially. Add to that the hoopla surrounding the arrival of Merilee, the city’s favorite daughter, and Pepper will look back fondly on the days when she only had to deal with more ‘worldly’ troubles, and not those of the spiritual realm as well!
