Descrição

Nearly 30 years separate the two concerts presented on this remarkable DVD. By 1959, Chet -who began recording in 1952 - had been a star for less than a decade. He first became known for his collaborations with Gerry Mulligan, and then with his own quartet featuring Russ Freeman and, for a short while, the ill-fated Dick Twardzik. It was after Twardzik's death from an overdose at the end of 1955 that Baker increased his own drug consumption. The effects of his habit would mark him for life. We must not attempt to guess the state of Chet's eyes at the Torino concert, where he plays all the
way through with black sunglasses on. Nor should we try to figure out how he had lost the teeth which are obviously missing from his ill-treated mouth. (We do know how he lost all of them some years later after being 'punished' by a drug dealer.) His playing and singing are, nevertheless, enjoyable, and it is indeed interesting to see this previously unissued document from his early career. We can even see a 1959 performance of the song which would become one of his trademarks: 'My Funny Valentine'. Famous Swedish sax player Lars Gullin is also present in the group and contributes interesting solos and accompaniment to Chet's playing and singing.
