Descrição

Excerpt from A Sermon, Delivered September 14, 1825, at the Ordination of the Rev. Samuel H. Peckham, as Pastor of the Church in Gray, Maine The Philippian Christians, to whom Paul addressed this epistle, were dear to him, because he had been instrumental of their conversion. He was confident that they were true Christians, - that God had begun a good work in them, and would perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. But his confidence in their final perseverance did not prevent him from using means for their confirmation in the faith and hope of the gospel, nor from exhorting them to the diligent use of means for their own advancement in holiness. He urged the importance of unity and fidelityin the cause of Christ, and of abounding more and more in knowledge, in love, and in all things that are excellent that they might be sincere, and without offence, till the day of Christ; being filled with the hits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory end praise of God. Only let your conversation he as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come end see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your ufl'sirs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel. It is the duty of Christians to make united exertion for the promotion of the cause of Christ. To explain and enforce this doctrine, comprise my design in this discourse.
