Descrição

This DVD contains a true rarity, a film made in 1970 in the home of Finnish composer Ilkka Kuusisto (whose two sons are famous violinists) when the Bill Evans trio visited him for a private performance. The trio (including Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums) plays three complete tunes and is interviewed between songs by Kuusisto and his friends. The grand piano was brand new, and Evans liked it. Bill gave Ilkka the At the Montreaux Jazz Festival vinyl as a present. Among the audience were some Finnish jazz people, including vibraphonist Jukka Haavisto (who’s still musically active). In these intimate surroundings, the usually shy Evans relaxes a bit, especially during the last tune, a long version of Miles Davis’ “Nardis”, in which he even responds to the general applause with a spontaneous smile. As a bonus, we have included another complete film. Produced for TV in 1966, The Universal Mind of Bill Evans is a good complement to the elsinki show. It belongs to almost the same period, and features Evans in both performance and in another interview (this time by his own brother Harry). Harry Evans also dedicated his life to music, although his real devotion (as can be seen on this film) was teaching. Although Harry was more outgoing than his brother Bill, he suffered from depression during
different periods of his life. He committed suicide nearly a year before Bill’s own death, which occurred in 1980. (Bill was highly affected by Harry’s suicide, and dedicated his last album to his brother, titled We Will Meet Again. The title song had been composed by Bill in 1977 for the album You Must Believe in Spring and was reprised here as a solo piano performance) A However, that would take place many years later. Here we have Bill and Harry discussing music, and Bill charmingly performing some of his tunes and explaining how a simple standard melody is transformed by the jazz artist into his own intricate tune (using “Star Eyes” as the example).
