Descrição

Sarah Vaughan (1924-1990) was, along with Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time. This lively concert in Prague showcases Vaughan with her working trio of the late seventies, which included the celebrated pianist-composer Carl Schroeder and drummer Jimmy Cobb, who gained fame as a long-time member of Miles Davis' legendary quintet with John Coltrane. On half of the numbers, trumpet and flugelhorn player Waymon Reed is added. Reed had played with the likes of James Brown and Count Basie, among others, prior to marrying Sarah in 1978. Their marriage ended in divorce a couple of years later, and Reed would suffer an untimely death from cancer in 1983, at age 43. The program on the Prague concert includes many classic standards which Sarah had recorded throughout her extended career. Feeling comfortable with her musicians and repertoire, she displays both her monumental vocal range
and expressiveness, and a strong chemistry and communication with her audience. With Benny Golson's 'I Remember Clifford', Sarah pays homage to the late Clifford Brown, with whom she had recorded one of her most beautiful albums in 1954. Sarah was also a competent piano player (she was the second pianist with the Earl Hines orchestra in 1943), and on 'Once in a While' she can be heard both playing and singing. The concert ends with a fast and amazing blues featuring Sarah scatting and trading fours with Reed's horn.
