Descrição

Hunting and conflict are as old as humanity, and in their quest to survive and win, men have striven down the centuries to find the tools and mechanical means to gain the upper hand. The history of arms development gives a colourful insight into past lives and disputes that might otherwise be forgotten.
Divided into two major parts, the book looks at early weapons, then brings readers up to date with modern-day arms that shaped the two World Wars and other conflicts of the last 150 years. Starting with the discovery of gunpowder, known as early as the 11th century in China and 13th century in Europe, the ingenious inventions and theories that have led to the sophisticated automatic weapons of today are all discussed.
Legends and fascinating stories passed down through generations weave colour into this amazing history of small arms. For example, a German monk called ?Black Berthold? is said to have discovered the design of Europe?s first gun when he pounded gunpowder in a mortar and the pestle shot out like a bullet. As readers will discover, many ancient inventions, deliberate and accidental, have gone on to form key elements of today?s weaponry.
Early weapons were often objects of beautiful craftsmanship, both in their workings and their ornate inlay, carvings or metal work. These are pictured, as are the contrasting sleek, light and efficient modern designs. The changing shapes, mechanisms and materials tell the story of designers responding to operators needs ? producing guns that have become ever lighter, easier to operate, less prone to adverse weather or field conditions and, of course, more effective against the enemy. For example, semi-automatic pistols and submachine guns developed for use in World Wars I and II changed the course of history, allowing a new and devastating type of warfare to take place. Countries jealously guarded and eagerly captured each other?s weapon designs to give their armies the upper hand.
Even in peacetime, weapons have been honed and perfected. The silencer was a major innovation after 1945, as were compact weapons for specialist and personal defence. The book ends with a discussion of the latest, non-lethal weapons, essential for today?s law enforcement officers who are able to stun or temporarily paralyse criminals while they apprehend them, causing little or no injury. This is an essential book for all gun enthusiasts. With information and pictures gathered by three renowned arms experts, it offers an authoritative and fascinating commentary on the historical development of pistols, revolvers and submachine guns.
