Descrição

In this collection of ten short stories we meet a range of extraordinary individuals. Each carries their own cross in societies marred by religious, political and social injustices. The protagonists are often a composite of people the author met during his career travelling the world as a foreign correspondent. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Uli Schmetzer's parents migrated to Australia when he was fourteen. After university he entered a journalistic career which included thirty-seven years with Reuters News Agency and the Chicago Tribune in South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Schmetzer retired early in 2002 and began to write his startling memoir, Times of Terror, followed by the novel, Gaza, the story of two close friends, a Jew and a German who travel to Israel. Schmetzer's third book, The Chinese Juggernaut, is a dramatized report of the persecution of the Chinese diaspora in Asia and Australia, and how Chinese immigrants gradually took over the economies and sometimes the politics of their Asian host nations.
